NEWARK – The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice released the following statement on Tuesday in response to Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s announcement that a software error caused the improper voter registration of thousands of New Jersey residents from 2023-2024:
“We are encouraged to see that the Sherrill administration is being transparent and proactive about addressing an error that should never have happened.
“From everything we have learned so far, we share the Governor’s dismay that it took as long as it did to fix the software problem at issue and that this problem was not disclosed to New Jerseyans when it happened.
“It is vital that we remember that those who were improperly registered were not responsible for that error; the software was. They did not misrepresent their status or intentionally register improperly.
“While we await the results of the full investigation, we will be monitoring any remedial action taken by the administration to ensure that voting rights are protected – as well as the privacy and safety of those who were innocently caught in this web. Our immigrant neighbors are already vulnerable, and this must not compound that.
“Finally, for years New Jersey has worked to embrace democracy and strong voter access protocols geared toward ensuring every eligible voter in our remarkably diverse state has safe and easy access to the ballot. We should continue to promote free and fair elections with vigilance and transparency – and not let this incident or any bad faith rhetoric it will engender interfere with that essential work.”
