Atlantic City’s Historic Black Neighborhood Celebated in New Exhibit

| ATLANTIC CITY — The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) will open two new exhibits at the Atlantic City location inside Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage, 2200 Fairmount Avenue. “Atlantic City’s Northside Restaurant” and “Dressed to Finesse” open Saturday, Sept. 12 and will be on display through Nov. 14. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for these two exhibits Saturday, Sept. 12 from 2-5 p.m. AAHMSNJ inside Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage. The exhibit is a historical exploration of 649 N. New York Avenue — currently NewYork Grocery and Deli — a location that once housed restaurants and a nightclub. Most notably, it was home to Rosa’s Southern Dining, a cherished restaurant that became a cultural anchor for Atlantic City’s community. This exhibit honors Rosa Mikelonis, now 94, celebrating her remarkable life, her contributions to Atlantic City’s history, and the legacy of her restaurant, a gathering place known for good food, music, fellowship, and even visits from celebrities like Muhammad Ali. Dress to Finesse presents expressive watercolor works by New Jersey artist Annemarie Mikelonis, capturing dresses as fluid, graceful extensions of identity. The collection highlights watercolor’s soft, transparent movement to reveal both vulnerability and strength in feminine expression. Celebrating creativity and individuality, the exhibit invites viewers to explore the bold, delicate, and ever-evolving nature of femininity through color, shape, and texture. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
