WHM: Mary Helen Perez to be Honored By Cape May County NAACP

WOODBINE — Community activist Mary Helen Perez, the first Hispanic woman to win a seat on the Woodbine Borough Council, will receive the Community Service Award this month from the Cape May County NAACP during its Freedom Fund Gala on Saturday, March 15 at the Wildwood Convention Center.
Perez, a lifelong resident of Woodbine, has served on the council for 15 years and is currently the chairperson of revenue and finance for the borough.
“I am honored and excited to receive this award from this prestigious organization and to follow in the footsteps of other trailblazing Americans,” Perez told Front Runner New Jersey.com about the award.
Perez told CMC NAACP that she considers her greatest accomplishment was founding and coordinating the Woodbine Kids Carnival, a community outreach event where everything including food, entertainment, demonstrations, education, and public assistance resources.
The event has always been free for children and their parents who come from Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic counties.

Perez is also a resource for constituents in many areas such as energy assistance, home ownership, finances, Armed Forces recruitment, college enrollments, financial aid, and many more programs offered by Cape May County, the state and federal government.
“Being recognized in your own community by your peers is an honor in itself,” Perez said.
Perez’s passion is and continues to be the youth of this country and guiding them on their path for success. She said she is also a dedicated mom to her son, Luis Guzman.
Other Awardees at the Gala
At the gala, Lifetime Awards will be given to Bernard Blanks, Sr., Donald Hamer Sr. and Dr. Charles Payne. Shirley Rebecca “Becki” Wilson will receive Lois Smith Tribute Award.
Along with Perez, other awardees include Chase Jackson, for the arts; Burgess Hamer, for humanitarian work; Hope Harris for community service; Kiana Bryan for business; Radzieta Funeral Home, for business; and Cape Assist, for health. Clyde Hughes, of Front Runner New Jersey.com, will receive a special recognition award.
