CAMDEN — Emmy Award winner and video producer, Ronald Estevez-Perez’s documentary, Untold Stories, shines a light on the Dominican community in Camden.
Many families migrated to this community and went through a great deal of hardships. Still, they overcame it all and are making a name for themselves and setting the path for future generations.
“The overall objective is for them to feel connected with the stories. But mostly, to feel represented.” said Estevez-Perez.
Younger generations needed to have someone that they can look up to. They needed to see that someone like them made it out of the struggle.
“Untold Stories” highlights families that migrated to Camden and built a new life from scratch. Entrepreneurs told their stories about their journey and educators explained their efforts in encouraging their students.
Movimiento Tricolor is a non-profit organization that contributed to this film.

“It’s a movement to represent not just the Dominican Community, but represent the latin and hispanic community,” said Estevez-Perez. “To support them but also show them how powerful they are. Even when they don’t realize it.”
The second half of the film highlighted the ways in which Movimente Tricolor gives a voice to the Dominican community. It helps people connect or reconnect with their cultures and customs.
On Sunday, Movimento Tricolor held Camden’s first Dominican Parade in honor of the Dominican Republic’s Restoration Day.
People waved their flag and cheered for the participants who put on amazing and unique performances. After the parade, everyone met at Wiggins Waterfront Park to enjoy live music, good food, and most all, each other.
Estevez-Perez hopes that “Untold Stories” is the first of many documentaries that tells the stories of different communities and different cultures.
“We just want people to feel identified, represented, and proud of who they are and who they can be,” said Estevez-Perez.
