GALLOWAY – In a race that will be closely watched around the country as the balance of power in Congress hanging in the balance, the Atlantic County Democratic Committee chair Michael Suleiman said that he will support attorney Tim Alexander in the U.S. Representative District 2 Democratic Primary.
If Alexander wins the expected crowded primary, he will take on Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew for a second time. Alexander faced Van Drew in 2022, losing 59% to 40%. Van Drew won the seat as a Democrat 2018 but changed parties the following year and has managed to hold onto the seat in three elections against three different Democratic candidates.
Suleiman said his endorsement is in his personal capacity and does not constitute an endorsement by the Atlantic County Democratic Committee. He said the committee will formally nominate a candidate at its annual meeting in March.
Educator Bill Finn, Terri Reese, who had affiliations with Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, and former U.S. State Department staffer Bayly Winder have announced they will run in the Democratic primary as well.
Van Drew, a supporter of Republican President Donald Trump, however, is seeing the White House facing low popularity numbers with the GOP losing critical ground in this year’s gubernatorial race after a strong showing by Democratic Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill.

“The 2026 election will be incredibly consequential for our nation,” Atlantic County Democratic Chair Michael Suleiman said in a Facebook statement on Friday. “As families grip with unaffordable housing, oppressing inflation, and skyrocketing health care premiums, it’s essential that Democrats retake Congress.
“Over the past few months, I have given a lot of thought to the Second Congressional District primary candidates currently running. They are all fine individuals and would make exceptional public servants. However, given that winning back the 2nd District will be difficult, I believe it’s important that Democrats across South Jersey unite behind a candidate who has earned strong support and trust at the local level.”
Suleiman said Alexander had continued to work since his last run to build strong name recognition throughout the district, coupled with solidifying his grassroots support across all six counties.

“His life story of turning a wrongful arrest into a career in law enforcement is admirable,” Suleiman said. “Tim’s troubling experience of dealing with a child with a catastrophic health crisis gives him the unique ability to campaign for health care reforms that will have a positive impact on middle-class families.”
Suleiman said Alexander and his wife Anna have been consistently advocating and organizing for down ballot Democrats all across South Jersey.
“In speaking with Tim, he assured me that his campaign will adopt a more direct and no-nonsense approach to communication, while prioritizing fundraising efforts to support the effective delivery of his message,” Suleiman said.
“While I will obviously support whoever wins the primary next June, I will do everything I can to help Tim Alexander as our next Member of Congress. He’ll fight for us.”
