MOUNT HOLLY — The Rancocas Valley Regional High School District Board of Education has appointed Moorestown Township assistant superintendent Dr. Karen Benton as the district’s next superintendent of Schools.

Benton takes over the reins of the school from Dr. Christopher Heilig, who announced his retirement in July after 10 years of service. She will begin her new role in February.

“I am honored to serve the Rancocas Valley community,” said Benton, who served as assistant superintendent in Moorestown for four years.

“I look forward to working together to ensure every student graduates prepared – with purpose, confidence, and a clear path forward – while continuing RV’s proud tradition of excellence and pride.”

District officials said that Benton’s leadership is grounded in a commitment to helping every student succeed and feel supported throughout their school experience. She focuses on building strong academic programs, expanding access to challenging coursework connected to both college and career pathways, and ensuring students graduate prepared with confidence and a sense of purpose.

Her experience overseeing operations and resources ensures that district decisions reflect a shared vision of learning and preparation for students.

“Dr. Benton has a proven track record of improving academic achievement, effective leadership and collaboration as a district administrator,” Rancocas Valley Regional High School Board of Education member Jesse Adams Jr., said.

“We look forward to her joining the Rancocas Valley community and guiding the district mission and long-term goals.”

Rancocas Valley Regional High School enrolls about 2,100 students serving the communities of Eastampton, Hainesport, Lumberton, Mount Holly, and Westampton in Burlington County.

Previously, Benton served in Ewing Public Schools as director of counseling services and assessment, assistant principal of Ewing High School, and STEM supervisor for Ewing Public Schools from 2014 to 2021. Benton started her career as a science teacher in Highland Park Public Schools and South Brunswick High School.

Benton earned her Doctor of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Carolina. She received a Master of Education degree in educational leadership from The College of New Jersey, and holds professional certifications as a school administrator, principal, supervisor and teacher in New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Florida A&M University.

She is an active member of several professional organizations, was a 2024 School Superintendents Association Superintendent Academy Fellow, and was recently selected to serve on the New Jersey Department of Education State Program Approval Council focused on improving educator preparation programs and policy.
