TRENTON — New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver has been appointed to the executive committee of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NGLA), the organization announced Wednesday.

Oliver, the first African American to serve as lieutenant governor in the state, was named part of the 16-member board that is being chaired by Delaware Lt. Gov. Becky Hall-Long, according to the NLGA’s website. Mike Foley, lieutenant governor of Nebraska, is the chair-elect.

Juliana Stratton, the African American lieutenant governor of Illinois, is serving as treasurer of the organization.

Along with her lieutenant governor’s duties, Oliver serves as commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, where she has led efforts to strengthen and expand initiatives for fair and affordable housing, community revitalization, homelessness prevention, and local government services that support New Jersey’s 565 municipalities.

Oliver started her rise in politics by serving as a member of both the East Orange Board of Education and the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. In 2003, she was elected to serve the 34th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly.

She became the first African American woman to the New Jersey State Assembly Speaker in 2010, and just the second in the nation’s history to lead a state legislative house.
