ATLANTIC CITY – Former Atlantic City First Lady Nynell Langford and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka were two of the awardees at the annual In the Black Community Awards presented by the South Jersey African American Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Nov. 20 during the League of Municipalities convention.
The VIP reception and awards were held at the Claridge Hotel Grand Ballroom. Baraka, who is running for New Jersey governor next year, was one of the main attractions as well as community award winners.
Baraka will be running in a crowded field in the Democratic Party primary next June that includes former State Senate President Steve Sweeney, current U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Mikie Sherrill, among others. Current NJ Gov. Phil Murphy cannot run because of term limits.
Langford, an Atlantic City native with decades of community service before, during and after she was first lady and a member of the Atlantic City School board, said she was honored for her service.
Langford, whose husband Lorenzo Langford served as mayor of Atlantic City from 2002-2006 and 2008-2014, continues her own legacy of service currently as a board member of the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority.
“I have a saying in our household that you don’t have to be elected to be effective,” Langford told Front Runner New Jersey. “That’s how we live. It’s a passion for our family. Our work is not for awards but the big award at the end when people say you made an impact in their life.”
Langford said other receiving awards included Atlantic County Commissioner Ernest Coursey, and Pleasantville union leader Rev. Jerome Page. Curtis Lackland is president of the South Jersey African American Chamber of Commerce. He could not be reached for additional comments.
According to Jimmy Whitehead, of the Atlantic City Business Roundtable, attendees included Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. and city council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz, along with Councilwomen LaToya Dunston and Stephanie Marshall.
Pleasantville Councilwoman Carla Thomas was there along with Derek Brock, Darryl Barnes Matt Doherty, Angela Burton, Tatev Hakobyan, Pastor Eric McCoy, Bishop Robert Hargrove, and Mark and Raymond Tyler from the Atlantic City Focus.
