Atlantic County Prosecutor Gives Kaleem Shabazz Outstanding Community Partner Award

ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic County Prosecutor William Reynolds surprised Atlantic City councilman Kaleem Shabazz with its Outstanding Community Partner Award during the branch’s Freedom Fund Banquet at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Saturday, April 29.
Reynolds, who has served as prosecutor for 11 months, praised Shabazz, the outgoing president of the Atlantic City Branch NAACP for his determination to work with law enforcement and a wide variety of grassroots community groups to ensure safety in the city.
The prosecutor said Shabazz was one of the first people he met when he arrived in Atlantic County to take his job and Shabazz has kept his promise in using his office in the community together to help improve the quality of life in the city.
“Everything we’ve done together, speaks volume about him,” Reynolds said. “He opened the doors for someone like me.”
Shabazz said he did not know of the award and new branch president Rosie Segura declined to tell him about a “special recognition” that appeared on the Freedom Fund’s program agenda.
“I’m almost speechless,” Shabazz said to the crowd of about 500 attending the dinner after Reynolds presented him with the award. “I said we would be partners and we have been. We have a long way to go. There are some real issues that we are dealing with here. We have to reduce the hate in this country.”
Shabazz, who has long been of champion of bring the Jewish community, the Muslim community other faiths together in Atlantic City, stressed that the city needs to be a place where everyone can feel safe and part of the community.
He said Reynolds made a statement when he showed up that an event that is important in the Muslim celebration of Ramadan. He said just by appearing he showed the Muslim community that he cared and that everyone feels protected by the equal force of the law.
