WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has joined National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and more than 20 journalism and civil rights organizations in condemning threats against journalists covering matters of public interest.

When Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon singled out veteran journalist Don Lemon for covering an anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis, she sent a dangerous message: journalists may face criminal consequences for doing their jobs.

This isn’t about one protest or one journalist. It’s about whether reporters can document events without government intimidation.

For journalists of color who frequently cover immigration enforcement, racial justice, and civil unrest, the erosion of press protections carries added risk. We will not stand by while government officials attempt to criminalize lawful newsgathering and reporting.

Press freedom is not conditional. It is not subject to political convenience. And it is non-negotiable.

NAHJ stands with Don Lemon, NABJ, and all journalists carrying out their duty to inform the public.
