HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — The Hamilton Township Democratic Club announced that Maria L. Newman will run for a spot on the Hamilton Township Committee this fall.
A licensed real estate broker who has lived in Atlantic County for more than 40 years, Newman is a former Hamilton Township Board of Education member. She is running under the slogan, “Our Community, Our Future.”
“A bilingual leader fluent in Spanish, Maria Newman brings a lived understanding of the diverse voices and experiences that define Hamilton Township,” said a statement released by Hamilton County Democratic Club.
“As a Latina and African American resident, she has dedicated her life to bridging communities and ensuring every neighbor — including Spanish-speaking families — has a seat at the table.”
Calling for a ban on large data centers, something that has been a hot topic in other South Jersey communities recently, including Vineland, Newman said she wants to expand on the voices being heard by the public.
She argues that such centers have left residents they are located in with skyrocketing utility bills and significant health risks from electromagnetic exposure while using excessive water and straining local resources.
Newman said in a statement that she would be an advocate for youth and use her professional background to promote fiscal oversight of tax dollars. She said she would push for “smart redevelopment” that would attract small businesses while creating a climate that would embrace current businesses already in the township.
“Running for Township Committee is my opportunity to give back — to make sure every voice is heard, every tax dollar is spent wisely, and that Hamilton Township remains a place where families can afford to live, work, and build their futures,” Newman said in a statement.
From 2020 to June 2023, Newman served as an elected member of the Hamilton Township Board of Education, where supporters said she championed students, families, and responsible fiscal decision-making.
Professionally, she is the owner of Genesis Realty & Property Management in Northfield, bringing decades of expertise in contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, market analysis, budgeting, and client advocacy — skills that translate directly to effective municipal leadership.
Hamilton Township Democratic Club President Laury-Ann Diaz offered her enthusiastic endorsement:
“Maria is exactly the kind of candidate our community needs — hardworking, passionate, approachable, and deeply committed to the people of Hamilton Township,” said Laury-Ann Diaz, president of the Hamilton Township Democratic Club.
“After the success of the last election, where we made history by flipping a seat, we are energized and hopeful about continuing that momentum into this race. We believe voters are ready to once again support leadership that is focused on progress, transparency, and putting our community first.”
Last November, Dr. Thelma Witherspoon retained her seat on the Hamilton Township Committee and Tracy Thompson defeated her Republican incumbent, placing two Black women on the committee for the first time ever.
