VINELAND — Darwin Cooper, Jr., a longtime member of the Vineland Zoning Board and a familiar name in local politics, has run for Cumberland County commissioner before — but he says this year’s campaign marks a new chapter.
After previously seeking office as a young Republican, Cooper is now competing in the June 2 Democratic primary, one of several candidates vying for three open seats. He said his shift reflects both personal growth and a deeper commitment to the issues he believes matter most to residents.
“I decided to run for commissioner because I believe Cumberland County deserves leadership that truly listens to working families, values community voices, and fights for fair opportunities for everyone,” Cooper told Front Runner New Jersey.com.
“As a Democrat, I believe in putting people first and protecting our neighborhoods, investing in smart growth, supporting small businesses, and ensuring that everyday residents, not special interests, are at the center of decision-making. I’m running because I want to be a voice for the people and help bring real, positive changes to our county.”
Cooper said his years on the Vineland Zoning Board gave him a front?row view of how development decisions shape daily life — from property values and infrastructure to long?term economic opportunity.
“It taught me the importance of balancing growth with responsibility, listening to community concerns, and making informed decisions that benefit the public long term,” Cooper said. “That experience has prepared me to approach countywide issues with practical knowledge, accountability, and a focus on sustainable progress.”
He said what distinguishes his candidacy is not just his résumé, but his connection to residents and his willingness to show up in their neighborhoods.
“I’ve spent time listening directly to them and meeting them where they are,” Cooper said. “I’m not running for status, I’m running to work. I bring energy, transparency, and a willingness to challenge the status quo when it’s not serving our communities.”
For Cooper, winning a seat on the Board of Commissioners would carry both personal and professional meaning.
“Personally, it would mean that the people of Cumberland County trusted me to fight for them, their families, and their future,” he said. “It would represent an opportunity to make a meaningful difference, to help shape policies that improve lives, and to prove that everyday people can step up and create real change in government.”
If elected, Cooper said he would prioritize responsible development, stronger community engagement, and ensuring residents have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their lives. Youth investment, he added, would be a central focus.
“I also want to focus on our youth and local youth organizations,” he said. “They should feel like the county has their back, so I will always have a seat at the table open for them and resources.”
Cooper said his campaign is forward?looking and rooted in the belief that county government must evolve to meet the needs of its people.
“It’s about making sure our communities are heard, respected, and prioritized,” Cooper said. “I’m committed to bringing honest leadership, fresh energy, and a people first approach to this role. This election is an opportunity for real change, fresh new leadership and I’m ready to get to work.”
