ATLANTIC CITY — Africa will move a little closer to the United States on Thursday, June 18, when an Ghanaian official from the Office of the President visits Atlantic City during the African Diaspora Business Summit at the Showboat Hotel.

The summit, beginning at 9 a.m., is designed for those looking to expand their businesses, invest in emerging markets, build strategic partnerships, promote their organizations, or reconnect with the global African diaspora community.

“The conference part of [the summit] will run from 9 a.m. to noon and then the Business Exhibition Networking part will from from 1-6 p.m.,” said Hadia Barakat, executive director of Rediscover Africa, the organization hosting the event.

“The goal of the event is to converge business leaders from Ghana and from the New Jersey area to have discussions on investment, trade, and collaboration opportunities. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the African American community and the African continent.”

The summit is supported by the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President of Ghana in partnership with Goldstar Consult Ltd., Ahaspora Professionals Network, and the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

“The response has been positive,” Barakat said. “We have a lot of people coming from out of state, from California, even from Canada. Several speakers are coming from outside the country.”

Barakat said scheduling the summit during the World Cup was intentional, as visitors from Ghana will already be in the United States for the tournament. The Ghana national team will play in Philadelphia on June 27.

She added that Atlantic City’s active Ghanaian community also made the city an ideal host location.

“There’s just a lot of anticipation for the summit because the people in Ghana, they’re excited to meet the diaspora community here,” Barakat said. “That’s not something they get to do often, and it’s the same thing with the diaspora community here. They are cxcited to meet people from Ghana.”

Representatives from Rediscover Africa attended the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey’s Juneteenth Innovation Summit last week to promote the Atlantic City event.

“Rediscover Africa is a dynamic organization operating in both Ghana and the United States, dedicated to strengthening the relationship between Africa and the global African diaspora,” said a statement on the Rediscover Africa website.

“Our work sits at the intersection of business, culture, and community, bringing together leaders, creatives, entrepreneurs, and institutions to engage Africa in meaningful and forward-looking ways.”
