BRIDGETON — Civil rights attorney Tim Alexander announced Friday it has secured the Democratic line for June’s U.S. House District 2 primary in Cumberland County, strengthening his bid to take on Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew in the fall.

Alexander is one of three candidates vying in the Democratic primary in an effort to unseat Van Drew, the former Democrat who switched parties in 2020 to support former President Donald Trump. Carolyn Rush and Hector Tavarez are also running.

“This endorsement is momentous because Tim Alexander has now been officially endorsed by all six county Democratic parties in the 2nd Congressional district, solidifying his role as the presumptive nominee,” Alexander’s campaign said.

“Cumberland County is also home to the second-largest base of Democrats in CD-2, only behind Atlantic County.”

Alexander would be bidding to become the first African American to represent the district.

Once a Republican stronghold, District 2 is more purple, voting for Democratic President Barack Obama twice before swinging for Trump in 2016 and 2020 by less than 51%.

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy lost most of the district last year but was re-elected statewide. Van Drew won the seat in 2018 as a Democrat and edged Amy Kennedy to win re-election as a Republican in 2020.

“I want to thank the Cumberland County Democrats for this incredible show of confidence in me,” Alexander said in a statement. “With a united front in all six counties now, it is time all South Jersey Democrats come together to retake the district we won in 2018. The time to make a change is now.”
