Aurora Polutan Lives Full Life in Philippines, Washington Township

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Aurora Benignos Polutan, a retired nurse from the Camden County Health Services Center and well-known in the local Filipino community, died last month after a longtime battle with diabetes, family members said. She was 76.
Polutan, a native of Maco, Davao de Oro, Philippines, lived in Washington Township with her husband Rogelio C. Polutan for 52 years. One of her daughters, April Ward, is a local small business owner and a Clayton Public School District Board of Education member.
Polutan received numerous awards and recognitions for her accomplishments professionally and in the community but she mostly enjoyed time with family and friends.
“Aurora was a breast cancer survivor and a resilient woman who loved having fun,” her obituary said. “She enjoyed taking pictures with and of her family and loved to travel. Aurora was always up for an adventure, especially hitting the dance floor and socializing with the Filipino nursing community.
“Through her numerous accomplishments and awards, such as Miss Pearl of Maco and Ms. Florence Nightingale, she will always be the Queen of our hearts.”
Polutan arrived in the United States from the Philippines in 1969 to Philadelphia where she met her husband, and then raised their family in Washington Township.
She retired from a successful career in nursing in 2007 but was shortly after diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy and in 2017 had knee surgery. She began receiving dialysis treatment a year later.
“Her husband Roger was always by her side as her dedicated caregiver,” the obituary said. “Aurora’s experience in geriatric nursing made her aware of the importance of being more conscious when dealing with older people. She urges everybody to be more conscious when dealing with older folks.”
Along with her husband, Polutan is survived by daughters Faye Brown and April Ward (James) and a loving grandmother to Eric, Donovyn, Ashley, Haley, Nolan, and the late Caleb.
Her funeral was held at the Church of the Holy Family at 226 Hurffville Road in Sewell.
