‘Papa May Have’ Strikes a Chord With Audience

VINELAND — A large, attentive crowd of about 2000 people enjoyed the reflective and illuminating Ty Lewis play “Papa May Have” on Friday (Feb. 10) at the Rowan College of South Jersey Cumberland campus Luciano Theater.
The play, part of the Black History Month Celebration by the Vineland African American Community Development Corporation, told the story of four brothers coming to grips with the death of their father at his funeral — as they came to grips with each other and their own history with him.
“The truth, lies and contradictions all come to a head as they travel along this modern timepiece,” said the playbill. “Along the way, the brothers poetically grapple with what it means to be Black men in a society where there is no safe space for anger or weakness.”
The play was performed with emotion and skill by Taye Hopkins, Myles Cream, Jai Surles, Julian Tubman, Darryl Thompson and Salimah. Arthur Leo Taylor co-directed the play and Pastor Albert Morgan, of the Union Baptist Temple in Bridgeton was the play’s special guest.
