Latina Civic Action to Host Building the Bench Gathering in Millville on Saturday

MILLVILLE – Latina Civic Action will bring its statewide effort to inspire more women to pursue leadership roles to Cumberland County on Saturday, June 27, with its Latinas Building the Bench Gathering, beginning at 11 a.m. at Reese’s House, 66 Sassafras Street.
The event will be led by statewide Latina advocate Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina, with participation from the Vineland Democratic Latino Caucus and Latina Civic. Celeste Fernandez, who served on Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s transition team, will also take part.

Building the Bench gatherings have been organized by Latina Civic in cities and counties across New Jersey, offering training, motivation, and support for Latinas seeking to run for office, step into leadership positions, and advocate for issues affecting their communities.
“We are meeting Latinas across NJ and making sure we come together to build our political power across NJ,” said a statement by Latina Civic on Facebook. “Cumberland County Latinas, let’s come together and stand up for our families.
“We are the leaders we’ve been waiting for. Together, we’re bringing Latinas together, county by county, to expand representation at the local, state, and federal levels. Representation matters, and when Latinas are elected, New Jersey wins!”
Latina Civic Action was founded following the success of a group of Latina leaders who, in 2001, united to support young Latinas and train them to run for office. At that time, only 3% of New Jersey legislators were Latina. Thanks to the work of these early leaders, the number of elected Latinas in the Legislature grew to 9% by 2021. Today, Latinas make up 21% of New Jersey’s population.

“We will advocate for issues that elevate the needs of our families, we will engage with legislators through advocacy campaigns and will engage voters to let their elected officials know that investment in our families future is a critical policy priority for all,” a statement on Latina Civic’s website said.
